Why Did We Name Our Gym Motive?
July 14, 2023 | Personal Training

Hi, I’m Brian Murray, founder of Motive Training. When I set out to create a personal training studio in Austin, I wanted a name that captured everything we stood for. The word that kept coming up, again and again, was motive. Here’s why.
Our Story: How Motive Training Began
In 2018, I was looking around the fitness industry and realizing something important: there was no real standard for personal training. You could walk into one gym and get a highly skilled coach who changed your life—or you could walk into another and end up with a cookie-cutter workout that left you injured or uninspired. That inconsistency never sat right with me.
I wanted to create a place where every client, regardless of their background, could expect a higher standard of coaching. A place where every detail mattered—from how we assessed your movement, to how we chose exercises, to how we supported you in reaching your goals.
That’s where the word motive became powerful. Motive is defined both as purpose and movement. That dual meaning captured exactly what I wanted to build: a training system grounded in intent, and a space where moving with purpose wasn’t just a tagline—it was the foundation of everything we do.
Why Purpose Matters in Training
Too often, people walk into a gym and move without intent. They grab random exercises from Instagram, follow generic programs, or chase numbers without considering what those numbers mean for their bodies. That approach might keep you busy, but it doesn’t guarantee progress.
At Motive Training, we take the opposite approach. Every program starts with a comprehensive assessment, often through the Functional Range Assessment. This evaluation tells us how your joints function, where your limitations are, and what kind of stress your body can actually handle. From there, we design a program that’s 100% specific to you.
That’s what it means to train with motive. You don’t just go through the motions—you know why you’re doing every single rep.
What Sets Motive Training Apart in Austin
We built Motive Training to fill a gap in Austin’s fitness scene. While there are plenty of gyms in the city, very few take a joint-first, science-based approach to training. Our methods combine strength training with advanced mobility systems like Functional Range Conditioning.
This means your workouts don’t just make you sweat—they make you move better. You’re not only building muscle or burning calories. You’re addressing the root causes of pain, developing healthier joints, and building resilience for the long term.
Many of our clients in South Austin come to us because they’ve tried everything else—physical therapy, group fitness classes, or big-box gyms—and nothing worked. By focusing on quality, detail, and joint health, we’ve been able to help people overcome pain, improve performance, and create sustainable progress.
If you’ve ever wondered what makes us different, it’s this: we put movement quality first, and results follow.
The Five Credos That Define Motive
The name “Motive” goes beyond branding. It’s the blueprint for how we coach, program, and guide people. That philosophy lives inside our five credos:
- Move With Purpose – Training without intent is wasted effort. Every drill, exercise, and cue we give has a specific reason behind it. This credo ensures your workouts always push you closer to your goals, whether that’s strength, mobility, or pain-free living.
- Do More With Less – Fitness doesn’t need to be complicated. Instead of throwing twenty random exercises into a program, we focus on the few movements that actually deliver results. Efficiency beats excess.
- No Pain = More Gain – Forget the old-school “no pain, no gain” mentality. Pain is not a badge of honor; it’s feedback that something’s wrong. At Motive, we design programs that challenge you without breaking you, ensuring long-term progress and resilience.
- Leave Better Than You Came – Our job isn’t just to deliver a workout; it’s to improve your day. Every session should leave you moving, feeling, and thinking better than when you walked in. That’s how we measure success.
- Always Be a Student – Fitness is never finished. Our coaches continuously study, learn, and refine their methods, and we encourage clients to adopt the same mindset. Growth happens when curiosity stays alive.
These credos aren’t marketing slogans—they’re the standards that guide every decision we make.
Local Roots: Why Austin Needed Motive
Austin is one of the most active cities in the country. From cyclists riding the Greenbelt to paddleboarders on Lady Bird Lake to the weekend warriors hitting local gyms, people here love to move. But with that activity often comes aches, injuries, and plateaus.
We created Motive Training in Austin to meet those needs head-on. Our gym at 714 Shelby Lane in the St. Elmo District isn’t just another fitness studio—it’s a place where people can finally train smarter.
By blending advanced mobility training with strength programming, we’ve helped:
- Cyclists extend their careers by protecting their knees and hips.
- Pickleball players improve rotational power and shoulder health.
- Desk workers reduce chronic back and neck pain.
- Everyday people rediscover what it feels like to move without stiffness or fear.
Austin didn’t need another gym. It needed a place that combined science, coaching, and philosophy into one unified approach. That’s why Motive belongs here.
